5 Reasons to Review Your Medicare Plan Every Year

Most Medicare beneficiaries never review their plan. They enrolled once, it seemed fine, and they've been auto-renewed ever since.

That inertia is expensive. Here are five reasons to review your Medicare plan every single year.

1. Your Plan Changes — Even If You Don't

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are allowed to change their benefits, premiums, provider networks, and drug formularies every year. You may be enrolled in the same plan number as last year, but the plan itself may look completely different.

The Annual Notice of Change your plan mails in September tells you what's different. Most people throw it away without reading it.

2. New Plans Enter the Market

Every year, new Medicare Advantage plans become available in Central Florida. A plan that didn't exist last year may offer better benefits, lower costs, or a broader network than anything currently available to you. You'll never know unless you compare.

3. Your Health Needs Change

A plan that was perfect when you were healthy may be costly if you've developed a new condition, started new medications, or need more frequent specialist visits. Your plan should match your current health needs — not the needs you had three years ago.

4. Your Prescriptions May No Longer Be Covered

Drug formularies change annually. A medication your plan covered at a low cost-share this year may move to a higher tier — or be dropped from the formulary entirely — in the coming year. An annual review catches this before it becomes a surprise bill.

5. You May Be Leaving Benefits on the Table

Dual-eligible individuals, veterans, and low-income beneficiaries often qualify for additional programs and benefits they're not receiving. A thorough annual review isn't just about the plan — it's about making sure you're getting everything you're entitled to.

The Review Takes 15 Minutes

I conduct free annual Medicare reviews for all of my clients and for any Central Florida senior who wants one. I'll check your doctors, your drugs, your benefits, and your costs — and let you know if there's a better option available for the coming year.
