How ACA Subsidies Work in Florida for 2026

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that ACA Marketplace health insurance is expensive. For many Floridians, it's actually very affordable — sometimes free — thanks to federal subsidies called Premium Tax Credits.

Here's how they work.

What Is a Premium Tax Credit?

A Premium Tax Credit (PTC) is a federal subsidy that lowers your monthly health insurance premium when you purchase a plan through the ACA Marketplace (healthcare.gov). The amount you receive is based on your household income and the number of people in your household.

You don't have to wait until tax season — you can apply the credit directly to your monthly premium, so you pay less every month.

Who Qualifies for Subsidies in 2026?

In Florida, you may qualify for a Premium Tax Credit if:

  • Your household income is between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)
  • You are not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, or an affordable employer plan
  • You are a U.S. citizen or lawfully present immigrant

Enhanced subsidies introduced in recent years have expanded eligibility, and many households at higher income levels now qualify for meaningful premium reductions.

How Much Can You Save?

The savings vary significantly based on income, age, and household size. A 60-year-old in Orlando with a household income around $35,000 per year may qualify for a benchmark Silver plan at little to no monthly cost. A family of four at similar income levels may see their premium drop by hundreds of dollars per month.

The only way to know exactly what you qualify for is to run the numbers for your specific situation.

What About Medicaid?

If your income falls below a certain threshold, you may qualify for Florida Medicaid instead of — or in addition to — a subsidized Marketplace plan. Navigating the line between Medicaid eligibility and Marketplace subsidies is one of the most important parts of what I do for my clients.
